RASA/BF project Purchase Network for Food Security in Burkina Faso

Problem to be solved

The population of Burkina Faso faces daily problems caused by climatic and environmental emergencies, like land degradation, volatility of food prices, lack of adequate resources to allocate for development policies. Women and children are the most vulnerable to malnutrition, as they often do not have their own means to get food but they depend on the work of the householder, often temporary and without guarantees. Malnutrition, associated with unhealthy living conditions, is the primary cause of many of the diseases affecting infants and children, reducing their life expectancy, and the regular child’s growth and development.

Our partner

The district organization ICCV Nazemse, from the beginning, works in a dynamic of community development, representing today a reference point for the whole community of Cissin. Thanks to activities that support the creation of income, thanks to the management of a nursery school and a library (the only one in the outskirts of Ouagadougou) and thanks to the accompaniment to the primary and secondary school for kids who can not afford school fees.

The project

The project aims to contribute to food security of Burkina Faso’s population and in particular of the marginal urban areas (suburbs of Ouagadougou) ensuring the availability, accessibility and quality of food to the most vulnerable people, while supporting the small local agricultural production and promoting the development of family farming. The project envisages the establishment, by groups of disadvantaged women of the neighbourhood (60 women) and unemployed youth (40 young), a Purchase Network for Food Safety (RASA) that will manage a Storage Centre for basic food, which will be stored in favourable season and sold at low prices in times of scarcity. In addition, 50 families in extreme poverty situation will be equipped with the resources to start a family garden, which will be able to provide some of the basic foods.
